How to Calculate Fabric for Pencil Pleat Curtains
Pencil pleat curtains are one of the most popular heading styles for both casual and semi-formal rooms. Getting the fabric calculation right is crucial -- too little fabric and your curtains will look skimpy; too much and you're wasting money.
What You Need to Measure
Start with two measurements: your track/pole width and your desired drop length (from the top of the heading to where you want the curtain to finish).
The Fullness Factor
Pencil pleat curtains need a fullness ratio of 2.0x to 2.5x the track width. This means if your track is 150cm wide, you need between 300cm and 375cm of gathered fabric. Most professionals use 2.25x as the sweet spot.
Calculating Widths
Divide your total gathered width by the fabric width (typically 137cm or 140cm) and round up to the nearest whole number. For our 150cm track example:
150 x 2.25 = 337.5cm total β 337.5 Γ· 140 = 2.41 β round up to 3 widths
Adding Hem and Header Allowances
Add 15cm for the bottom hem (doubled over) and 10-12cm for the header (pencil pleat tape). If your drop is 220cm:
220 + 15 + 10 = 245cm per cut length
Pattern Repeat Adjustment
If your fabric has a pattern repeat (e.g., 64cm), you need to round up each cut length to the next complete repeat:
245 Γ· 64 = 3.83 β round up to 4 x 64 = 256cm per cut length
Final Calculation
Multiply the adjusted cut length by the number of widths: 256cm x 3 widths = 768cm = 7.68m of fabric. Always add 3-5% for shrinkage.
